Academie

As of August 2008, my husband and I have embarked on a journey through all of the Academy Award winning Best Pictures, chronologically.  Being the art history geek that I am, I am writing a review of each film we watch.  All of these reviews will be categorized under “Oscars” and will follow the order in which we view them.

A little bit of Oscar history to get us started:
The first Oscars ceremony was held in 1929 and was not open to the public.  This first set of awards included recognition of films from both 1927 and 1928.  The private affair version of the ceremony was replaced the very next year due to rapidly growing public interest.  That second annual ceremony was broadcast by a Los Angeles radio station, and the ceremonies have been covered by radio and television ever since.  The first sixteen Best Picture nominee lists included anywhere from three to twelve films, officially shortened to five nominees for the 1944 awards.  In 2009, the number was doubled to ten to acknowledge additional merit-deserving films.

  1. I’ve done this very thing before, but I think it’s awesome that you’re doing it together. It’s never occurred to me to do this with my wife…sounds to me like I need to pay Netflix a little visit and start over. ;)
