“Most of my photos are grounded in people. I look for the unguarded moment, the essential soul peeking out, experience etched on a person’s face. I try to convey what it is like to be that person.” (stevemccurry.com)
Steve McCurry made me want to be a photographer, and more specifically an international photojournalist, from the time I was seven. And they were his images in National Geographic that made me fall so in love with Asia. To be sent to cover stories abroad, to capture images of people from all walks of life, to receive the last roll of Kodachrome, and to remain almost exclusively behind the lens. This is the ideal life I was torn to pursue. I have traveled and photographed many people, places, and events, but I ultimately chose to start a family whom I wished to see on a daily basis (and I don’t regret this decision). But certainly for a day, to carry my camera through Angkor Wat and develop my photos for publishing in National Geographic would be a lifelong dream come true.
